Apiary No1 was on my visit list recently. This is where I keep the hives which I experimented with when I first started beekeeping.

The apiary has 4 WBC and 1 Commercial type.

In the photo the WBC's are the white ones and the far end is the commercial. You may recognise the WBC's as they were the more predominantly used hive in Britain for many years. They have boxes inside and are surrounded by attractive sections called lifts which are removed to gain access to the boxes inside. Their advantage is this 'outer wall' provides extra protection and insulation in the harsh British winters. However, and maybe because of climate change, they have gone out of favor and are less often seen these days. Part of the reason for this is they require a lot more work and time to take apart and put back together on weekly visits.

The third type of hive I use (shown in the photos below) is the National Hive. This is my preferred hive and now all my new hives are Nationals.
