I’ve been beekeeping for around 13 or 14 years now and it has added so much pleasure and purpose to my life.
Beekeeping is one of the most fascinating and rewarding hobbies you can take up. It’s also full of surprises. Once you’ve caught the beekeeping bug, you’ll never look at nature in quite the same way again! Whilst I’m all for modern technology and embrace it in my daily life as I accumulated birthdays, I also became aware of just how much my modern life was removing me from the natural world and in particular ‘seasonality’. Some of the things I so fondly remembered from my countryside childhood, when I was so in touch with the outdoors, had gone. How had this removal from nature crept up on me! So it was that I came to be a professional beekeeper.
I thought I would share 5 of the things I most love about being a beekeeper and I would be so happy if I could introduce something very special to your life!
1. You’ll Never Stop Learning
A colony of honey bees is an extraordinary little world, with thousands of bees working together. Even experienced beekeepers are constantly learning. Just when you think you understand your bees, they’ll prove you wrong!
2. You’ll Discover Nature in a New Way
Beekeeping makes you much more aware of the seasons, weather and flowering plants. You’ll soon find yourself admiring fields of dandelions rather than wishing someone would mow them!
3. Your Very Own Honey
There’s nothing quite like tasting honey produced by bees you’ve cared for yourself. Every harvest is different, reflecting the flowers and countryside surrounding your hives. And that first jar? Absolutely priceless!
4. You’ll Meet Wonderful People
Beekeeping has a fantastic community, full of people happy to share their knowledge and experiences. You’ll quickly discover that beekeepers can talk about bees for hours—often considerably longer than their families would prefer!
5. It’s a Hobby With a Purpose
Honey bees are valuable pollinators, and beekeeping encourages a greater appreciation of our natural environment. Of course, keeping bees comes with responsibilities, including regular inspections and proper colony care, but that’s all part of the adventure.
